Massage therapy licensing guidelines: Alabama

According to the Alabama Massage Therapy Board, becoming a licensed massage therapist in Alabama requires education, examination passage, a clean criminal record and liability insurance. Here is a breakdown of the guidelines an escort must complete if she (or he) wishes to become a massage therapist:

  • Massage Therapists must be U.S. citizens are in the country legally.
  • Massage Therapists must complete at least 650 hours of supervised course instruction. The hours must be broken down into a curriculum that includes:
    • 250 Hours of basic massage therapy techniques and clinical practice modalities
    • 100 Hours of anatomy, physiology, pathology and related classes
    • 50 Hours of CPR, first aid and business practices
    • 250 Hours of electives (approved by school and board)
  • Passage of National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. (The test cannot be taken more than two times within a two-year period.)
  • Massage Therapists licensed in other states with comparable guidelines may be awarded a license if other guidelines are met.
  • Massage Therapists must acquire approval of licensing application by the Board of Massage Therapy.
  • Massage Therapists must provide evidence of $1,000,000 liability insurance coverage.
  • Establishments must be licensed by the Board of Massage Therapy.
  • No sexually-oriented establishment may be licensed by the Board of Massage Therapy.
  • The license can be revoked under certain conditions:
    • Conviction of any crime arising out of massage therapy.
    • Found guilty of any prostitution-related offense or other sexual offense. The license will be revoked for up to 3 years.
  • Anyone found guilty of performing massage therapy without a license may be subject to fines up to $10,000.
  • The word "massage" cannot be used in advertising by non-licensed establishments or sexually-oriented business.
  • Massage therapists are required to acquire 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
